ABOUT THE INSTITUTE

Institut Pasteur of Shanghai (IPS) is an independent research institution jointly established by Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Institut Pasteur and Shanghai Municipal Government in 2004. IPS is dedicated to enhancing preparedness and responsiveness to infectious diseases through conducting cutting-edge research and sustained translation of solutions.

IPS is working closely with other CAS and IPIN member institutes to address the great challenge of public health in countries along the One Belt One Road, from highly pathogenic influenza to Zika outbreaks. Joint efforts range from pathogen discovery and solutions to disease control and prevention.

THE VACANCY

In the context of IPS, “The Center for Microbes, Development and Health” addresses the “post-modern, non-communicable epidemics” emerging in high-income regions, including high susceptibility of newborns to infections, and the developmental defects affecting populations in low-to-middle income regions, the focus being on the etiological role played by the ongoing global degradation of the human-microbial interface.

Within the center, the lab of Microbial Molecular Pathogenesis and Symbiosis, which is dedicated to investigating the role of the gut microbiota in maintaining a colonization barrier against pathogens, is seeking outstanding young scientists.

Key responsibilities:

The scientist will work on deciphering detailed molecular mechanisms how pathogenic microbes interact and subvert the intestinal mucosal microbiota and thus disrupt its homeostasis to establish their colonization and invasion.

The scientist will also analyses the participation and roles of intestinal innate immune factors, enteric anti-microbial peptides in particular, in epithelia-micro biota-pathogens interactions. She/he will be responsible to design, supervise and interpret day-to-day project activities and write research papers and grant proposals.

Requirements:

1.     PhD degree in Biology, expertise in cell biology and microbiology.

2.     At least three years postdoctoral training in related areas.

3.     Solid publications in peer-reviewed journals.

4.     Broad technical expertise and enthusiasm in scientific research.

5.     Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English and Chinese, including giving presentations.
