Introduction of the Director
Eric Westhof is a member of the French Academy of Sciences and the German Academy of Sciences (Leopoldina), a member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), a member of the Association of Chinese and French Experts, a principal researcher at the Wenzhou Institute of the University of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), a visiting professor at the Southwest University of China (SWU), a professor emeritus of the University of Strasbourg (UNIS), and the president of the French Society of Gutenberg Representative.
For his outstanding academic achievements, he has received several French and international awards, including the Jacques Monod Prize, the Charles Leopold Meyer Prize, the Distinguished Service Award of the RNA Society, the Fyodor Lynn Medal of the German Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Wang Yingjian Medal of the Shanghai Institute of Biochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Rolf Sammet Prize of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Datta Medal of the European Union of Biochemistry, and the Lifetime Achievement Award of the International RNA Society.
According to Web of Science, he has published 477 papers (32,760 citations with an h-index of 97),
Projects and Research
His research activities focus on the relationship between sequence, three-dimensional structure, evolution and function of RNA molecules. The goal is to understand RNA evolution and the ongoing interaction between sequence changes and RNA structure/activity. Through comparative crystallographic and bioinformatics approaches, he studied RNA folding and biological functions. To this end, he introduced the "Leontis-Westhof" RNA base pair nomenclature to annotate all types of base pairs in nucleic acids, and in 2010 he launched RNA-Puzzles, an international competition to evaluate blind predictions of 3D RNA structure. The project is part of an ongoing effort to extract maximum information from structure-anchored comparative sequence analysis. Because sequence alignment and 3D assembly of RNA modules have enabled me to predict large catalytic RNAs, such as those of group I introns and RNaseP, he hopes to continue my research along these lines. Indeed, RNA sequence alignments are extremely rich; they allow the identification of conserved helix lengths, unpaired regions, anchor points, conserved residues, semi-conserved residues, concatenated regions, RNA modules and conserved hairpins, conserved or exchanged non-Watson-Crick pairs, as well as key structural residues (e.g., U-turns). The project will include (1) development of methods and tools for generating structure comparisons, i.e., experimental structure-based comparisons, and (2) automation of the overall process.
Conditions for recruitment
1. Hold PhD in molecular chemistry, molecular biology, structural biology or bioinformatics;
2. Good reading and writing skills in English ;
3. Ability to work independently on a computer, and proficiency in at least one programming language;
4. Skills in molecular calculations or sequence alignments are advantageous.
Compensation
The postdoctoral students will be admitted to the postdoctoral mobile station of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS), and the fresh graduates will enjoy the same policies as those of NUST, such as staying in Beijing and working place is in Wenzhou, and the outstanding ones can be recruited as the associate researcher of the subject group after leaving the station. The postdoctoral positions are divided into three categories (A, B and C), and the salaries are as follows:
A: 40W + tutor's allowance (0-18W) + performance incentive + five insurance and one gold.
B: 30W + mentor subsidy (0-12W) + performance incentives + five insurance and one pension
C: Negotiable mentor + performance incentive + five insurance and one gold
